St. Louis vs. Chicago: Round One

Most of you know that Adam and I lived in Chicago for ten years before moving south (ha!) to St. Louis. Ah, sunny, tropical St. Louis. Right…

So I’m lying in bed last night, listening to the sleet pelt our windows when it dawned on me. In Chicago, it snows (a LOT) in like the beginning of October. And that snow does not leave the city until the end of May. Literally. Parking lots (rare they may be) tend to be scraped clear of snow, creating these gigantic mountains of icky, grey snow. And the piles do not shrink b/c they’re often shoved into the shady area of the lot. So they remain, collecting more dirt, ick, and smog, turning blacker and blacker as the winter wears on. It’s disgusting. But it’s real snow.

Here in STL, this is what happens: it rains. Usually overnight. The temperatures drop while it’s raining and the water changes to ice. Finally, sometimes, it’ll switch to snow. So you wake up some sunny (don’t get me started on freezing temps and sunshine. I hate it) morning to a blanket of snow. “Oh, isn’t that fun!” you say, as you roll out of bed. I think I’ll walk in the snow today. Well, if you do so, I advise mountain-climbing spikes on your shoes. Because what looks like a blanket of snow is actually a small deceptive dusting of the fluffy stuff covering for a treacherous and vindictive layer of ice underneath. Lovely, huh? So you go skipping off into a snow bank only to find yourself face-up and clutching your tailbone in pain seconds later. It’s a cruel joke Mother Nature plays on us here in the Lou. But, the plus side is that it almost always melts in a matter of days. At most.

So who wins? Is it the 3/4-year’s worth of filthy snow in the Windy City or the quick-melting death trap in STL?

I’m calling this one a draw. But it’s not over yet!!!
